Bamboo Forest Hike

The Bamboo Forest Hike on Maui is one of the island’s most enchanting and otherworldly adventures. Located along the famed Hana Highway, this trail leads you through a towering bamboo forest that sways and creaks in the wind, creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Hawaii.

The journey begins with a gentle descent through lush bamboo, crossing small streams where sunlight filters through the tall, dense stalks, casting shimmering green patterns all around. The soundscape shifts as the wind rustles the bamboo, producing a rhythmic, almost meditative soundtrack.

First Waterfall

A well-worn footpath guides you through the heart of this magical grove, making passage easy—even in wetter conditions. The cool, fresh air and profound sense of isolation create a feeling that time has slowed, giving you space to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with nature.

The first of three waterfalls is perfect for a refreshing swim and offers an excellent photo opportunity. To continue, hikers must scale a wet, muddy rock face—with ropes available for assistance.

The second waterfall

The second waterfall is nature’s playground. A massive pool at the base of a 40-foot cascade invites visitors to swing from ropes and leap from tall rocks into the deep, clear water below.

To reach the next stage, you’ll climb a 10-foot ladder up a sheer rock face. At the top, pause for the perfect selfie overlooking the falls.

The Third Waterfall

As the trail continues, you’ll pass several small pools and fruit trees, with the sweet scent of ginger in the air. A final 50-yard swim through the stream brings you to your reward: an inspiring 80-foot waterfall tumbling down a lava rock cliff into a misty pool—ideal for swimming and cliff jumping. It’s the perfect finale to a hike that’s as much about the journey as the destination.

The Bamboo Forest Hike is approximately 4 miles round trip and moderately challenging. Bring plenty of water, sturdy shoes, and prepare for muddy terrain. For those seeking raw, mystical beauty, it’s a must-do on Maui
